CHAPTER 1:

What is a Pool Enclosure?

Pool Enclosure

pool enclosure simply refers to a structure that is built around and over a swimming pool for the purpose of offering general safety as well as protection to your pool.

In other words, you can describe it as a swimming pool “cover”.

Such a structure not only provides a roof to your swimming pool but also surrounds each and every corner of your pool.

This plays a significant role in ensuring proper tidiness of your pool as well as restricting entrance of unauthorized persons.

Have a look at this;

Swimming Pool Enclosure

Why should I purchase a swimming pool enclosure?

How will it be beneficial to my pool?

I know this are some of the many unanswered questions that might be crossing through your mind.

Well, let’s head to the main subject of this section.

1. Protects pool users from the harmful UV rays

Most swimming pool enclosures are constructed using polycarbonate sheets as the glazing material which filter the harmful UV rays from accessing the pool.

Pool enclosure protects the pool

Figure 2: Pool enclosure protects the pool

2. Prevents debris from falling into your pool

A pool enclosure provides proper coverage both above and around your swimming pool preventing foreign materials including debris from gaining access into your swimming pool.

This in turn ensures cleanliness of your swimming pool leading to minimum maintenance practices.

3. Prolongs your swimming pool activities

With a pool enclosure, you are guaranteed usage of your pool all year round no matter the season.

Extends swimming time

Figure 3: Extends swimming time

Whether it’s a rainy, snowing or just a cold season, a pool enclosure offers maximum protection against such adverse weather conditions.

The use of polycarbonate sheets as your glazing material will offer you an added advantage as it lasts much longer as compared to its substitutes.

Don’t worry, I will explain more about them later in this guide.

4. Offers maximum enjoyment

Other than swimming, you may opt to host other activities around your pool area.

A swimming pool enclosure will provide an appropriate outdoor space to conduct such activities.

Why am I saying this?

Well, other than shelter, a swimming pool enclosure can be a great form of décor around your homestead.

Large swimming pool enclosure

Figure 4: Large swimming pool enclosure

As I said earlier, pool enclosures come in diverse designs.

The glassy look revolutionizes the appearance of your home portraying an image of a classy, luxurious resort at the comfort of your backyard.

5. Provides privacy

Having people from the neighborhood prying on you when you need privacy is irritating.

This is why a swimming pool enclosure will come at your rescue and provide maximum privacy when needed.

You might as well choose to use tinted glass or otherwise introduce curtains to your enclosure for maximum privacy.

6. Reduces water evaporation

Water evaporation is bound to take place during hot sunny days.

During this period, pool water that evaporates rises up and gets blocked by the roof of the pool enclosure.

Water evaporating from swimming pool

This forces it to settle on the roof and later drops back into the swimming pool which in turn reduces water loss.

7. Minimizes accidents around the pool area

A pool enclosure contains a locking mechanism which otherwise controls entrance of unauthorized person into the pool.

Kid drowning in a swimming pool

Figure 7: Kid drowning in a swimming pool

This as well minimizes cases of pool accidents as you will be able to monitor your kids as they enjoy pool activities.

Just to add on that, you might as well choose to have a remote control locking system enabling you to open and close the enclosure from anywhere in your homestead.

Sound cool, right?

8. Enriches the beauty of your pool

The shiny, reflective, glassy appearance of a pool enclosure creates a classy look in your backyard or homestead.

Lights add beauty

Figure 8: Lights add beauty

As if that’s not enough, you might choose to incorporate other fancy features such as plants, lighting and furniture which would definitely add spark around your swimming pool area.

9. Moderates pool maintenance

Owing to the fact that a swimming pool enclosure protects debris and other foreign materials from entering the pool area, your pool maintenance routine will be reduced.

Protection from intrusion

Figure 9: Protection from intrusion

As if that’s not enough, the pool chemicals will not easily evaporate and this means that you will use lesser amounts.

10.  Increases the value of your property

Last but not least, owning a swimming pool enclosure will increase the value of your home when the time comes for you to sell it.

Elegance adds value to property

Figure 10: Elegance adds value to property

It’s with no doubt that potential buyers would be lured to purchasing your property first due to the added accessory around your pool.

Now you get why this would immensely increase your property value right?

In short, a swimming pool enclosure is a must have equipment if you want to achieve all these luxury and cost benefits for your pool.

CHAPTER 3:

Pool enclosure Parts and Components

Pool enclosure Parts and Components

From the examples of swimming pool enclosures you can see above, this accessory is an assembly of different parts and components.

In this section, I am going to introduce you to different parts and components that make up a pool enclosure.

Let’s dive right in:

3.1: Swimming Pool Enclosure Cover

As I explained earlier, a pool enclosure cover is one of the vital component of a swimming pool enclosure.

It’s basically the part that covers and provides a roof to your swimming pool.

In most cases, the swimming pool enclosure cover is made up of polycarbonate sheets or glass.

Pool enclosure cover

Figure 11: Pool enclosure cover

The choice of your material depends on your budget as well as preferences.

But, here is the reality that most manufacturers won’t tell you.

Using polycarbonate sheet for your pool cover will not only guarantee you a longer life for your enclosure but also save on your costs.

I will explain more about this in the next section, keep reading.

A swimming pool enclosure will offer you several benefits in your disposal ranging from protection from harmful UV radiations, preventing foreign materials from falling into your pool, adding value as well as beauty to your property among others.

Now that you understand the many other benefits that come with owning a pool enclosure, I will go right to the next pool enclosure component which is the frame.

3.2: Pool enclosure frame

In order to ensure full support of your pool enclosure cover, you will need to use frames while building your enclosure.

Pool enclosure frames come in different colors. However, the most common ones are white and bronze.

You might as well decide on the color based on the theme of your home.

The pool enclosure frame is made of a strong metal called Aluminum which has the ability to withstand adverse weather conditions.

Pool enclosure frame

Figure 12: Pool enclosure frame

How does it achieve this?

Aluminum is coated with paint which prevents moisture and color changes from messing with its quality.

Aside from extruded aluminum, you can as well introduce a wooden frame for your pool enclosure.

However, I wouldn’t recommend such a frame owing to the many drawbacks that come with using it.

First, wooden is a good absorber of water. Meaning, using it as a pool enclosure frame will expose the frame to rotting leading to a shorter lifespan.

Aside that, wood is susceptible to infestation by termites which might consume it leading to huge losses being incurred.

In as much as wood is a cheaper material, it will be important for you to consider such factors before making any purchases.

However, this doesn’t mean that you should avoid using wooden frames, No.

You can choose to use them as long as you adhere to the proper measures required in order to maintain it.

Here is what you need to do.

Before conducting any form of wooden frame installation, make sure you treat the wood with a borate-based preservative.

How is this done?

First, you have to clean the wood and make sure it is dry.

Thereafter, make sure that the room is well ventilated then spread pieces of newspaper to cover your working space.

Wear protective clothing not excluding gloves then apply the preservative using a brush ensuring both ends are well coated.

After you are done, you will go on with a second coat. But not too fast.

At least give the first coast around four hours for it to fully be absorbed then apply a second coat.

Thereafter, give it another 48 hours before spreading over a water-repellent finish on to the wood.

Having done that, your wooden frame will now be fully protected from termite infestation and ready for use.

3.3: Pool enclosure rail system

A rail system is a part of a pool enclosure that facilitates easy opening and closing of your swimming pool enclosure.

Pool enclosure rail system

Figure 13: Pool enclosure rail system

In most cases, a pool enclosure rail system is present in retractable pool enclosures as they have the capability of sliding back and forth.

You might be wondering what a retractable pool enclosure means.

Well, a retractable pool enclosure refers to a type of enclosure that can easily be opened and closed by sliding opposite slides of the enclosure.

In other words, its referred to as a telescopic swimming pool enclosure.

This is what I’m talking about;

Retractable swimming pool enclosure

Figure 14: Retractable swimming pool enclosure

As you can see, the above pool enclosure is fitted with wheels which facilitate the opening and closure of the enclosure.

Just like a train moves on rails, so does a retractable pool enclosure.

A rail system is constructed round the pool strategically positioned to accommodate rolling of the wheels of your pool enclosure around your pool.

I’m hoping you are now conversant on what a rail system entails.

In most cases, wheels are present in high profile swimming pool enclosures as compared to medium profile enclosures.

You can install a rail system despite the shape of your swimming pool.

Some pools have a regular shape such as rectangle, circle or square while others are irregular.

With skilled manpower on-site, perfuming installation activities on an irregular pool would just be as easy as it would on a regular one.

3.4: Swimming pool enclosure door

A door is one of the most important parts not only for a swimming pool enclosure but also for other structures such as houses, buildings and the likes.

It facilitates entrance as well as exit from the pool enclosure.

Some doors are manually operated while other have a self-locking mechanism.

This leaves you with an option of choosing one that suites your desires and preferences.

Swimming pool enclosure door

Figure 15: Swimming pool enclosure door

Installing a door will definitely heighten the level of privacy in your swimming pool enclosure as well as ensure security.

Additionally, a door will prevent foreign materials blown away by wind from entering your pool enclosure.

This undoubtedly keeps your pool tidy and reduces future constant maintenance routines.

3.5: Pool enclosure door locking mechanism

For a pool enclosure to be properly secured, you will need to install a locking mechanism that will help you achieve this desired purpose.

As I mentioned earlier, you have an option of constructing a door that would use a remote control or otherwise stick to the commonly used locking mechanism.

There are several types of locks that would be ideal for use in your pool enclosure door not excluding;

I. Wing handles

Wing handles are one of the most commonly used types of locks. They are referred to as wing handle simply because they have a handle which is the main part that facilitates pushing or pulling of the pool enclosure door.

Have a look at this;

Wing handle

Figure 16: Wing handle

Just beneath it, there is a locking system which will require you to use a key so as to secure your door.

II. Latch locks

A latch and a lock are two different equipment that you need to understand.

A latch refers to a clamping equipment which operates by joining two separate surfaces together in order to facilitate closure.

This alone is not enough for maximum safety. You need to use it along with a lock in order for you to achieve maximum safety.

The question is, what is a lock?

Basically, we can term it as an equipment which uses a key for it to fully secure your door.

Have a look at the following latch lock

Latch locks

Figure 17: Latch locks

III. L and T locks

Just as the name suggests, the L and T locks form letter L and T just as shown in the diagram below.

L and T Locks

Figure 18: L and T Locks

From the picture above, you can visibly tell that the handle is the part facing downwards.

IV. Radial Pin tumbler locks

This type of lock is designed to prevent unauthorized person from opening the lock with a different key. This is facilitated by cylindrical pins which are often arranged in a circular manner.

This is how the lock looks like;

Radial pin tumbler locks

Figure 19: Radial pin tumbler locks

V. Cam locks

Cam locks are not only used in pool enclosures but also in various equipment and furniture all over the world.

This particular locks are cylindrical in shape and have the locking handle located at one end while the lock on the opposite side of the door lock.

This is what I’m talking about;

Cam lock

Figure 20: Cam lock

VI. Water resistant locks

This type of lock is the best type to use in outdoor enclosures.

Why I’m I saying this?

Water resistant locks have the capability of enduring harsh weather conditions without getting spoilt as they are resistant to water.

Have a look at these;

Water resistant lock

Figure 21: Water resistant lock

Your pool enclosure designer will be in a position to recommend you the best lock for you depending on the type of your swimming pool enclosure.

3.6: Pool enclosure fasteners

Pool enclosure fasteners are meant to hold or rather clasp together parts of a pool enclosure.

In other words, we can say that a fastener system not only protects your pool enclosure from electrolysis but also enables it to last much longer.

Pool enclosure fastener

Figure 22: Pool enclosure fastener

There are several types of fasteners in the market for you to choose from. However, the use of zinc metal is popular among most of the companies.

Why is this so?

Zinc is not only pocket friendly but also readily available making it widely used by manufacturing companies.

Nevertheless, we have two main popular types of fasteners. That is Nylo-Tec and Pro-tech fasteners.

First, let me start by outlining some of the benefits of each of the two fasteners.

Nylo-Tec

  • It achieves a well finished long lasting look.
  • The presence of a UV stabilized color helps it to become resistant to fading.
  • It has the capability of withstanding harsh weather conditions.
  • Has a wide range of colors to choose from and can be customized to suite your choice of color.
  • Nylo-Tec fasteners are considered to be one of the best quality fasteners in the market.

Pro-Tect

  • It is easy to install
  • Just like the nylo-tec fastener, it has a UV stabilized color which prevents it from fading.
  • Pro-tect fastener is one of the best quality fasteners.
  • In addition, it does not corrode easily.
  • Owing to the fact that it doesn’t easily corrode, pro-tect fasteners are bound to last much longer.

3.7: Pool enclosure ventilation system

A ventilation system is a must have for every enclosed structure be it a house, a building or an enclosure.

Design allows air to flow when the cove is closed

Figure 23: Design allows air to flow when the cove is closed

It is meant to facilitate free circulation of air inside your pool enclosure.

Without it, you will breath in a chlorine odor which is mostly due to the chlorinated swimming pool water. You don’t want that.

A cool, fresh air will create a more relaxing and comfortable feel in your pool enclosure.

This is the reason why you will need to fix a pool enclosure ventilation system.

An efficient pool enclosure ventilation system should be able to accommodate the following types of air required for a pool enclosure be it indoors or outdoors.

  • Outdoor air- This refers to the actual ventilation air. It is the fresh air that enters the enclosure but is yet to be treated.
  • Supply air – Supply air is comprised of outdoor air as well as recirculated air. It is the overall airflow that enters the pool space
  • Exhaust air – Just like the name suggests, exhaust air refers to air removed from the pool to the outside environment.
  • Return air- This is the type of air that gets out of the pool space and comprises of air to be exhausted and recirculated.

Having all this fixed in your pool enclosure ventilation system will ensure efficient air supply in and out of your enclosure.

3.8: Pool Enclosure Gutter

Gutters play a major role not only in pool enclosures but also any built structure.

The question here is, what do we mean by a gutter?

Well, this is an equipment that works by channeling water that falls on top of the roof to a better preferred location away from the structure.

Gutter

Figure 24: Gutter – Photo courtesy: Great North West Gutters

In our case, a pool enclosure. It’s important for you to know that this particular component of a pool enclosure is common with fixed swimming pool enclosures.

Why?

Owing to the fact that a telescopic enclosure is frequently adjusted, it would be impossible to fix gutter around the roof top.

Have a look at this;

Installing a gutter system for your pool enclosure will guarantee you benefits such as;

  • Saves you from future maintenance expenses. This comes as a result of its ability to channel water away from the enclosure in turn preventing damage to your enclosure.
  • Keeps your basement dry and neat. Think of a pool enclosure lacking gutters.

This will mean that water that falls on the enclosure’s rooftop will directly drop at the base of the enclosure causing untidiness.

  • Protects the roof of your enclosure. Gutters will deposit materials such as snow, rain water, leaves among others that fall on top of the enclosure roof to a desired location.

This definitely facilitates durability of the roof.

3.9: Pool Enclosure Heating System

Being able to enjoy your pool all year round is what most pool owners desire.

However, that is cut short due to a number of situations such as weather changes.

During cold seasons, it might be challenging to use your pool area. This is the reason why you need to introduce a heating system to your pool enclosure.

Swimming pool heat pump

Figure 25: Swimming pool heat pump

There are several ways through which you can heat your pool enclosure including;

Electric heaters – This are mostly portable heaters which are best suited for a small space.

However, proper precaution must be adhered when using any portable electrical tool around the pool area.

It is advisable to use it at least 10 feet away from the pool.

Radiant heating – this is one of the best forms of heating suitable for any type of enclosure.

Not only does it heat the entire pool but also warms the floor making it more comfortable for you to move around the enclosure.

All you need to do is set your desired temperature and leave it at that state.

Switching it off will make you wait for 1-2 hours the next time you will be using your enclosure.

CHAPTER 4:

Swimming Pool Enclosure Material

Swimming Pool Enclosure Material

When constructing a pool enclosure, we have two major types of materials that are largely used.

I’m talking of solid polycarbonate sheets and extruded aluminum.

This two are used to build the pool enclosure cover and frames respectively.

Let’s go straight to the main subject of this section.

4.1: Solid polycarbonate sheet for pool enclosure cover

Most pool owners prefer to use solid polycarbonate sheet as the glazing materials.

Solid polycarbonate sheet

Figure 26: Solid polycarbonate sheet

By glazing I mean, the glassy part of a pool enclosure which forms the pool cover.

This is probably due to the many beneficial factors attached to it that I am about to explain to you.

However, that doesn’t mean you are only limited to a solid polycarbonate sheet.

Materials such as glass can as well be used in place of solid polycarbonate sheet.

However, glass is highly prone to breakage and cracking. In addition to that, glass is more expensive than purchasing a polycarbonate sheet, a reason why most people prefer using polycarbonate sheet as their glazing material.

Glass also has some advantages as it creates a classier look as well as transparency.

Also glass can be improvised to block the harmful UV radiations.

Nevertheless, I will explain to you why a polycarbonate sheet would be the best choice, keep reading.

4.2: Benefits of using polycarbonate sheet

Some of the main benefits why you should go for polycarbonate swimming pool enclosure include:

Polycarbonate swimming pool enclosure

Figure 27: Polycarbonate swimming pool enclosure

  • As compared to glass, polycarbonate sheets are designed to last longer.
  • If you are working on a budget, then a polycarbonate sheet would be the best choice as it is much affordable as compared to glass.
  • Polycarbonate sheets are safer as they are not prone to cracking or breakage.
  • Provides protection from harsh weather conditions enabling you to make use of your pool all year round.
  • Prevents entry of unauthorized people from using your pool without your permission.
  • Increases the value of your property. When the time comes for you to sell your property, buyers will be lured to purchasing your property first as compared homeowners lacking enclosures for their swimming pools.
  • Polycarbonate swimming pool enclosures enhances beauty not only around your pool area but also your garden as a whole.
  • Tinted polycarbonate sheets have the ability of further ensuring your pool privacy as it prevents onlookers from peeping through your enclosure.
  • A polycarbonate pool enclosure encloses your swimming pool preventing occurrences of accidents such as drowning incidences. This is due to the fact that you will be able to control who gains access into your pool enclosure.
  • Reduces the amount of water lost due to evaporation. Instead, the little evaporated water settles on the roof surface inside the enclosure and thereafter condenses and drops back into the swimming pool.

As you can see, we have plenty and plenty of reasons as to why a polycarbonate sheet would be the ideal material to use for glazing.

4.2: Extruded aluminum material for pool enclosure frame

Extruded aluminum has largely been used in the construction of a swimming pool enclosure.

Extruded aluminum for pool enclosure

Figure 28: Extruded aluminum for pool enclosure

This is due to the fact that it possesses attractive features such as

  • Durability- Extruded aluminum is quite durable as it is a strong metal.
  • Rust resistant- The paint on the extruded aluminum prevents water and oxygen from reacting which would otherwise cause rusting on the metal.
  • Lightweight- Apart from being a strong metal, extruded aluminum weighs less making it easily portable.
  • Recyclable- Aluminum can be recycled be it damaged or unused.

Aside extruded aluminum, you can also use wood for your frame.

As I said earlier, you have to keep in mind that wood is prone to rotting more so if it constantly absorbs water.

To add on that, wood can be infested by termites which might lead to huge losses.

Section of pool enclosure made from extruded aluminum

Figure 29: Section of pool enclosure made from extruded aluminum

However, if your home is located in the woods, then using wood would be the perfect choice as it would blend evenly with the surrounding environment.

All you have to do is treat the wood before using it as well as painting it to avoid reduce the risk of rotting.

This are the main reasons as to why most people choose to construct their frames using extruded aluminum.

CHAPTER 5:

Types of Pool Enclosures to Consider

Types of Pool Enclosures

Based on your swimming pool design, we have several types of pool enclosures that you might consider introducing to your swimming pool space.

These include;

  1. Fixed swimming pool enclosure
  2. Telescopic/retractable swimming pool enclosure
  3. High profile swimming pool enclosure
  4. Low profile swimming pool enclosure
  5. Pool enclosure attached to house
  6. Pool enclosure roof styles

1. Fixed swimming pool enclosure

Unlike retractable pool enclosures, fixed pool enclosures have no capability of being opened or closed by sliding back and forth.

Such enclosures are permanently fixed only giving room for a door to facilitate entrance and exit from the pool.

This is what I’m talking about;

Fixed swimming pool enclosure

Figure 30: Fixed swimming pool enclosure

2. Telescopic swimming pool enclosure/Retractable swimming pool enclosure

As the name suggests, a telescopic pool enclosure is opened and closed simply by sliding two opposite sides of the enclosure back and forth.

Have a look at this;

Retractable swimming pool enclosure

Figure 31: Retractable swimming pool enclosure

3. High profile swimming pool enclosure

A high profile pool enclosure simply refers to a pool cover that is positioned at a higher distance above your swimming pool.

Have a look at this;

High profile swimming pool enclosure

Figure 32: High profile swimming pool enclosure

You can clearly see that such a pool enclosure leaves ample space around the pool.

This makes it use more materials during construction in turn raising the cost of constructing it.

4. Low profile swimming pool enclosure

Unlike a high profile pool enclosure, a low profile pool enclosure has its roof just a few meters above the pool.

In other words, the pool enclosure lays low above the swimming pool.

Check this out;

Low profile swimming pool enclosure

Figure 33: Low profile swimming pool enclosure

Due to its design, you will use less materials in constructing it making it one of the most affordable type of pool enclosures.

However, a low profile pool enclosure will restrict you from comfortably moving around your pool area owing to its low height.

5. Pool enclosure attached to house

In case your swimming pool is located next to your house, then building an enclosure attached to your house would be an intelligent choice.

Why am I saying so?

Attaching a pool enclosure would not only ensure improved security but also be of much convenience.

Just have a look at this enclosure;

Wall mount swimming pool enclosure

Figure 34: Wall mount swimming pool enclosure

As you can see, such a pool enclosure will make it much easier for you to co-ordinate pool activities while in the comfort of your house.

6. Pool enclosure roof styles

Apart from categorizing pool enclosures as per their size and height, we can as well classify them according to the roofing designs.

We have several types of roofing designs that you can choose from.

However, in this guide I will majorly focus on the most commonly applied designs as shown below.

Roof designs

Figure 35: Roof designs

7. Flat Roof Style

Just as the name implies, this type of roof has a relatively flat roof surface.

In most cases, flat roof design is classified as a low profile pool enclosure.

8. Sloped roof style

A sloped roof has one its side slanting from a point higher to a lower point.

Most pool enclosures that are attached to the house take this form of roof design.

To add on that, a slope roof design allows debris and other unwanted materials to easily slide down the roof minimizing maintenance.

Also, this increases the durability of your roof as it will not be destroyed by the accumulated debris.

9. Gable roof style

This type of roof design has both of its two opposite sides sloping and meeting at the top.

You can otherwise refer to it as an A-frame roof.

Just like letter A comprises of two slanting sides, so does it.

Many homes have a gable roof design a reason why it is more popular.

As you can see from the diagram above, its roof is positioned high above the pool making it to be classified as one of the high profile pool enclosures.

As compared to a flat roof design, gable roof requires a lot of materials during construction making it more expensive.

10. Dome roof style

One unique feature about this roof design is that it neither slants nor does it have a flat surface, a dome room forms a semi-circular shape.

This allows for unwanted materials to easily slide down the dome in turn avoiding accumulation as a result leading to massive destruction.

Aside that, a dome roof design leaves ample room for accommodating other features such as furniture and plants.

Why is this so?

The roof is positioned higher above the pool and we have no reason not to classify it as either a medium or high profile pool enclosure.

11. Mansard roof style

From the diagram above, you can clearly conclude that a mansard roof comprises of the flat roof and the gable roof.

This is due to the fact that it has a flat surface at the top and two opposite slanting sides.

Also, its sides form a trapezoidal shape that join at the flat topmost surface.

A mansard roof can not only be designed into several architectural structures but also is cable of accommodating extra features such as furniture in your enclosure.

12. Hip roof style

Most people confuse a hip roof with a gable roof style.

Often because they look so much alike. But the thing is, this two are different.

You might be wondering what makes them different.

Well, for a hip roof all the four sides have a slanting effect as compared to a gable roof which has two slanting sides while the shorter sides are flat from the top all the way down to the pool deck.

A hip roof requires less maintenance as debris and other unwanted matter slide down the roof making the roof tidier.

As if that’s not enough, it is very spacious allowing room for other activities or addition of furniture inside your enclosure.

With that said, you are now in a position to decide on the best roof design for your enclosure.

But while doing that, you need to ask yourself this question.

How else can I come up with more pool enclosure design ideas?

What’s the Cost of Installing Swimming Pool Enclosure?

Installing Cost Swimming Pool Enclosure

The cost of installing a swimming pool enclosure will be determined by a few factors such as;

  • Size of the swimming pool- It’s with no doubt that the larger the swimming pool the larger the pool enclosure and so does the cost increase.
  • Quality of material used- Using materials of a lower quality would cost you less as compared those of high quality.

However, its believed that cheap is expensive and well, you don’t want to keep buying the same things over and over.

So, what’s the bottom line here?

It’s better to purchase a product of high quality which would assure you durability than the cheaper ones.

  • Pool enclosure design- Having information on the different pool enclosure designs, it’s with no doubt that high profile pool enclosures would cost more as compared to the low profiled ones.

This would also be costlier if extra features such as retractability are added

onto it.

  • Permanent vs portable enclosure- Installing a permanent pool enclosure would cost you more than a portable one.

Reason being, a portable enclosure is made of lightweight materials and doesn’t require a lot of labor.

Cost of Excelite swimming pool enclosure

Figure 42: Cost of Excelite swimming pool enclosure

These are the major factors that influence the cost of installing a swimming pool enclosure.

But the question remains, how much will it cost to install a pool enclosure?

Before anything, you should keep in mind that it’s not a must for you to employ a professional to get the work done.

You can as well install the swimming pool enclosure on your own. I will give you a step by step process on how to build your own, just stay with me to learn more.

Installing a pool enclosure professionally will averagely cost you around $30-$34 per hour.

This normally takes 9-14 days for the whole swimming pool enclosure to be fully installed.

Meaning, it will cost you approximately $300-$550 during the installation process.

Choosing to include other features such as retractability would definitely increase the cost.

However, you can choose to install it on your own more so if you are a handy person.

By doing this, you will end up saving a lot as the only costs you will incur are the purchasing costs.

Cost of Excelite swimming pool enclosure

On average, purchasing a swimming pool enclosure will cost you around $4500 to $14000 with a portable enclosure going for $385.

However, it’s important to know that prices vary from one region to another.

With that said, let me go straight to explaining how you can install a pool enclosure by yourself.

CHAPTER 8:

Installing a Pool Enclosure Step-by-step Process

Installing a Pool Enclosure Step-by-step Process

Having covered different designs of pool enclosures, it might seem challenging to install them each one of them.

However, that shouldn’t worry you anymore. By the end of this section you will realize how simple this whole procedure is.

Step 1. Gather all the parts of the pool enclosure

Make sure you have all the required parts as sold by the manufacturer. Remember, the larger your swimming pool the more equipment you will use.

Sample part and component list

Figure 44: Sample part and component list

Step 2. Study the parts of the pool enclosure

After assembling all the essential parts together, carefully study each part.

This will help you know which fastening tools to use when working with parts such as bolts, nuts or even screws.

Most manufacturers include a manual in their products to help you in the installation process, carefully study the manual before starting the installation.

The manual outlines the right measurements as well as quantities to work with when assembling different parts of the enclosure.

Step 3. Install the rail system

For telescopic pool enclosures, a rail system is an essential part.

Installing a rail system is basically the start of your entire pool enclosure installation.

Start by marking around the pool in order to know where you will position your pool enclosure.

Thereafter, position your enclosure in such a way that the edges lie on the longest sides of the pool.

This will ensure that for you to open the enclosure, then you will push from the shortest to the longest side and closing it will be the vice versa.

Take a look at this;

Layout of rail system

Figure 45: Layout of rail system

Most medium profile pool enclosures lack wheels and instead are fitted with a sliding mechanism.

However, this is not the case with high profile pool enclosures as most of them have wheels.

From the diagram above, you will install the rail system in the two longest opposite sides of the pool.

This step also applies to irregular swimming pools.

Step 4. Assemble the structure of your pool enclosure

Take your extruded aluminum frame or any other frame that you are using and start by joining the separate frames together.

You should follow the manual in case of any difficulties and also handle the tools with care as most manufacturers don’t include extras when doing the packaging.

As you progress, you will realize that a meaningful structure starts forming.

It should look like such;

Assembling structure of pool enclosure

Figure 46: Assembling structure of pool enclosure

After the frames are in place, it’s now time for you to fix the glazing material of your pool enclosure which will be much easier.

This might either be a polycarbonate sheet or glass.

All you have to do is position your polycarbonate sheets on to your frames starting with the smallest panel all the way to the largest one.

This ensures that the smallest pool enclosure panel is positioned at the extreme end of the pool.

After you are done with this step, your pool enclosure should look close to ready as the only thing remaining would be to install the door.

But before that, it’s important to make sure that the pool enclosure is already operational by testing all the functionalities.

Step 5. Mount the door of your swimming pool enclosure

Installing a door will be of much benefit to your swimming pool enclosure.

  • You will be assured of maximum safety around your pool space.
  • A door will prevent debris and other unwanted materials from entering your swimming pool.
  • Having a door for your enclosure will help you control pool movements. This in turn reduces risks such as drowning in the swimming pool.

These coupled with several other benefits makes it vital for any pool enclosure owner to consider fixing a door.

Door lock

Figure 47: Door lock

The manual will direct you on how to fix a few parts together in order to create a locking system as different manufacturers use different locking systems.

This is the simplest process of all as you will only have to follow the manual.

First, mount the door one of the sides of your enclosure using the tools provided by your manufacturer.

After doing this, you will have the locking mechanism left.

There are several locking systems that you can use for your pool enclosure such as latch locks, water resistant locks and cam locks among others.

However, make use of the locking system provided by your manufacturer.

After accomplishing this, test and confirm that all components are working as desired.

Fully assembled pool enclosure

If they are, then your pool enclosure is ready for use. It is that simple!

The only thing that’s remaining is adding some décor in your swimming pool enclosure which I’m about to give you some juicy tips in the next section, so keep reading.

By the way, remember, the installation process will vary from one pool enclosure design to another.

The good news – all pool enclosures come with an installation manual.

Take a look at this guide: Pool Enclosure Installation Guide: The Ultimate Guide on How to Install a Swimming Pool Enclosure.

CHAPTER 9:

Swimming Pool Enclosure Decorating Ideas (Basic Tips to Transform Pool Enclosure)

Swimming Pool Enclosure Decorating Ideas

Decorating your pool enclosure will absolutely transform the look of your pool enclosure to one classy and stylish one.

This depends on the theme you want to achieve.

You might opt to have a tropical theme, vintage theme, rustic theme or one that matches the theme of your house.

So, how will you come up with all these?

It is as simple as introducing plants, furniture or even lighting that blends well with your desired theme.

I. Pool enclosure painting

It’s no secret that we have hundreds and hundreds of colors and making a choice might seem such a challenging task.

If you find yourself in such a situation, then choosing earth tone colors would be the best decision.

Which are these earth tone colors?

They include;

  • Grey
  • Brown
  • White
  • Black
  • Blue

Aside these colors, we have other colors which you might be interested in.

It’s important for you to know that the choice of color might determine how people will portray you. In short, color passes a message.

Some of the colors and their meaning include;

Green- Green portrays growth and health as well as nature.

Red- As this color attracts much attention, it portrays drama as well as passion.

Yellow- It is a color of happiness, intellect as well as energy.

Blue- Blue is associated with trust, confidence, loyalty as well as heaven.

These are just a few of the many existing types of colors.

Pool enclosure with black frames

Figure 50: Pool enclosure with black frames

Take your time in choosing a color for your enclosure as the pool enclosure color will largely portray your character.

There are three types of paints including spray paints, oil based paint as well as water based paint.

Despite all of them being used for painting purposes, I would only recommend the oil based paint.

Why I’m I saying so?

Such a paint is not only smooth in application but also has the best adhesion to metal and dirty surfaces.

In most cases, pool enclosure owners choose to paint their enclosure bronze, white, grey or black simply because such colors blend well not only with nature but also other colors around the garden.

II. Pool enclosure lighting ideas

Lighting up your swimming pool enclosure would add spark in your pool especially during the night.

Pool enclosure lighting ideas

Figure 51: Pool enclosure lighting ideas

Imagine a swimming pool all glowy with lights of different colors reflecting on the calm water. Looks amazing right?

This is just one of the lighting ideas among many others that I am about to explain to you.

We have two major sources of lighting, that is solar and electricity.

But, when it comes to your pool enclosure, safety should come first.

Both of them achieve the desired purpose. However, solar lights will be the best option to use inside your pool enclosure.

Why I’m I advocating for this?

  • Most importantly, solar will be much cheaper as compared to electricity as it uses energy from the sun.
  • Water is a good conductor of electricity. Meaning, using electricity around your swimming pool might pose danger to the pool users.

This might happen in case of water spillage into a naked wire which might lead to great losses such as fire.

However, that doesn’t mean that you cannot use electricity at any cost.

Only that you will have to lay out safety precautions and measures when installing all the cables to avoid future accidents from occurring.

There are different types of lighting that you can use in your pool enclosure.

This depends on the purpose of your enclosure space.

If you are planning to use it as an entertainment area where you can have a couple of drinks with friends as you party, then colored lights would blend quite well.

You can place the light bulbs all around the walls of your enclosure or have them installed in the roof just as shown below;

Pool enclosure lighting ideas

Figure 52: Pool enclosure lighting ideas – Photo courtesy: Live On Beauty

On the other hand, you can introduce dim light if your enclosure space will often be used for relaxation as these creates a tranquil atmosphere.

Again I have some tips that you can introduce to your enclosure in order to create a more stylish look and ambience.

First, I’d like to introduce to you the silhouetting technique which involves focusing a block object by placing it in front of a light bulb in order to achieve an illuminated backdrop.

Have a look at this effect;

Unique lighting effect on pool enclosure

Figure 53: Unique lighting effect on pool enclosure

Another technique is highlighting which involves placing your light bulb at the bottom of a specific feature that you want to put into focus making it more noticeable.

Normally, the light is positioned at the bottom of the tree in order to highlight it more.

Creative lighting is the key to making your enclosure livelier and unique. Creating a lighting pattern would play a significant role in transforming your pool enclosure.

You can choose to use ring lights or string lights to achieve different forms of patterns.

With string lights, you can fix them in any pattern you wish as they are in form of strings.

Whether you want to create a wavy lighting pattern or a crisscrossing pattern it’s up to you to decide.

Either way, you will have achieved a unique pool lighting.

III. Pool enclosure furniture

The next things that you would wish to introduce to your pool enclosure are furniture.

Furniture will not only add some spark to your enclosure but also add more comfort.

So, how should I choose the right furniture for me?

That must be the question lingering in your mind.

Choosing the best furniture for your pool enclosure is simple.  First, decide on what theme you want to achieve.

Is it a rustic theme?

If so, them go for furniture that have a rustic design.

Do you want a tropical theme?

The best type of furniture for you would be one that resembles nature itself.

Pool enclosure furniture

Figure 54: Pool enclosure furniture – Photo courtesy: Decohoms

You can also choose to maintain your house theme for your pool enclosure.

All these are some of the many ways that you can use to come up with the correct type of furniture for your enclosure.

Keep in mind that the purpose of your enclosure will as well play a significant role when choosing the right furniture.

Take for instance you want your enclosure to serve as a relaxing space.

Investing in comfy furniture will be a wise decision for you.

If you are planning to use it as an entertainment area, let’s say for drinking with friends then classy and elegant furniture suited for drinking purposes would be an ideal choice.

However, if you find it challenging choosing the right furniture, I would recommend you to approach an interior designer.

They will professionally advice you on the best designs to purchase.

IV. Pool enclosure landscaping ideas

Ensuring that the surrounding environment of your pool enclosure is kept neat and beautiful plays a role in highlighting the beauty of the enclosure as well.

Landscaping entails a number of factors such as adding plants and construction of structures in order to enhance the appearance of your outdoor space.

You can otherwise refer to it as gardening.

Pool enclosure landscaping

Figure 55: Pool enclosure landscaping

To enhance the looks of your garden, there a number of tasks that you have to do.

First, do away with dead or dried up plants and replace them with new ones of color.

If you have settles on a tropical theme, then adding plants such as palm trees, orchids, monster among many others would help you achieve the theme much better.

However, not every climate will allow such plants to thrive. Before embarking on adding any types of plants, it’s advisable to consult your local nursery.

By doing so you will get wise advice on which plants would thrive in your locality.

Addition of plants is not all, introducing a small waterfall at the centre of your garden would be a great idea as it would act as a focal point of your landscape.

V. Pool enclosure privacy ideas

For some reasons, you might need privacy inside your pool enclosure. You can ensure this by surrounding your enclosure with a fence, wall or even shrubs.

If you choose to go with a fence, using living fences would create a natural look around your pool enclosure.

Such fences might be made from shrubs, trees or even vines.

This is what I’m talking about;

Pool enclosure with a fence

Figure 56: Pool enclosure with a fence

On the other hand, using a wall as your fence would serve the same purpose of creating privacy.

The good thing about walls is that they don’t need constant maintenance as compared to plants.

What if you neither want to construct walls nor plants shrubs and palm?

Well, here is what you need to do.

Purchase curtains that quite well blend with your pool enclosure features and fix them on to the sides of your pool enclosure.

Whenever you need privacy, all you have to do is unravel them to cover all the transparent spaces of your enclosure and tie them up once you need some light to penetrate through.

Curtains actually guarantee you maximum privacy as compared to any other form of privacy as you will be the one in control.

One last trick you can use is using tinted glazing material be it glass or polycarbonate sheet.

All these practices are aimed to help you achieve some kind of privacy and ensure maximum comfort while using your pool enclosure.

CHAPTER 10:

How to Clean and Maintain Swimming Pool Enclosure

Clean and Maintain Swimming Pool Enclosure

After decorating your pool enclosure and sing it for some period of time, you will realize that it also needs maintenance.

Snow on pool enclosure

Figure 57: Snow on pool enclosure

By this I mean routine cleaning of the enclosure together with other forms of maintenance that I’m about to explain to you.

The question here is, what tools and accessories should I use to clean my pool enclosure?

10.1: Pool enclosure cleaning tools and accessories

Some of the major items you will need for cleaning your pool enclosure include;

  • Pressure washer- This is mostly used in cleaning the gutters as well as the entire pool enclosure. Hot water under high pressure together with some soap is used to get work done.

You don’t have to worry about your pool enclosure being destroyed by the high pressure as the amount of pressure applied is gentle enough for your enclosure.

  • Leaf blower- Just as the name suggest, a leaf blower is meant to get rid of the debris that has settled on the roof of your swimming pool enclosure.
  • Pool brush- A pool brush is normally used to remove loose debris that has accumulates at the roof top of your enclosure.
  • Pressure washing chemical injector – You will use a pressure washing chemical injector in cases whereby you need to use chemicals with your pressure washer.

After acquiring all these, the only thing remaining is learning how to clean your swimming pool enclosure.

You don’t have to look for a professional in this simply because you are capable of tackling this task on your own just like any other house chore.

10.2: Step-by-step process how to clean swimming pool enclosure

Remove snow on pool enclosure

Figure 58: Remove snow on pool enclosure

Step 1; Prepare the work area

The first task you should do is clearing the work area. You might be having furniture, personal belonging, plants that might get wet during the cleaning process.

Ensure all these are removed. Also take this chance to figure out what you don’t need in your enclosure in case you are finding it so crowded.

Step 2. Inspect if there are any cracks or holes

Whether your swimming pool enclosure is made of glass or polycarbonate sheet, conduct a thorough inspection and find out whether there exits cracks or tiny holes on your pool enclosure.

This will prevent the enclosure from further destruction caused by the high pressured water.

Step 3. Remove debris and other unwanted materials from the roof surface

This is where the actual cleaning starts. Using a leaf blower to dispose of the debris that has settled on the roof surface.

In case of too much debris, use a pool brush to rake off all the remaining debris.

After clearing all the debris, blend two tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda together with two pints of water, preferable warm water.

Thereafter, pick your scrubbing brush and scrub the solution onto your swimming pool enclosure.

It’s important to note that using a brush with hard bristles might damage the surface and that’s the reason why you should make use of a small bristled brush.

At this point, the stains and dirt should be shifting on the enclosure meaning that the solution is working effectively.

All you have to do is rinse the enclosure and you will be done with the cleaning.

If not so, then you will have to consider using a bleach solution.

Step 4. Use a bleach solution or oxygen bleach

Do you have some molds and algae growing on your pool enclosure? Then bleach would be the best solution to use.

Bleach has the ability of getting rid of molds, spores and algae with one wash.

Cleaning polycarbonate surface

Figure 59: Cleaning polycarbonate surface

First, smear a highly diluted bleach solution on your pool enclosure. Thereafter, use a pressure washing chemical injector to deck it and wait for a few minutes for it to “soak”.

Make sure to follow instructions as stated by the manufacturer in order to know the right amount of bleach and water to mix.

Lastly, rinse your swimming pool enclosure and you will be done with the cleaning. As simple as that.

Step 5. Dry your pool enclosure

Here is the reality:

A number of manufacturers won’t tell you, if you happen to leave your pool enclosure for it to be dried by the sunrays, you might get back to re-visiting the whole cleaning process from scratch.

Why I’m I saying so?

After rinsing your enclosure, there are streaks that form due to the thin layers of sliding water which might tamper with the tidiness of your already cleaned pool enclosure.

To avoid this, use a chamois cloth to dry the enclosure immediately you are done with the rinsing.

With all this information, it should be a simple task for you when planning to conduct any type of cleaning in your swimming pool enclosure.

CHAPTER 11:

Pool Enclosure Laws and Regulations

Pool Enclosure Laws and Regulations

Laws and regulations are meant to ensure that cautious precautions are adhered to either by the manufacturers or the pool enclosure users.

Pool enclosure

Figure 60: Pool enclosure

Just like a country has laws and regulations, so do swimming pool enclosures.

Nonetheless, the laws and regulations vary from one region to the other.

In this section I will look at the general major guidelines that are set by law from different regions.

So, which are these laws and regulations governing pool enclosures?

  • First, every pool enclosure should at least have a height of 5ft.
  • Any pool enclosure owner should make sure that any entrance leading inside the pool is kept locked unless an adult is supervising the enclosed area.
  • For pool enclosures that are attached to buildings, the pool enclosure owner should ensure that the doors leading into the enclosure from the building are fixed with a self-latching device which should be positioned approximately 1.5 meters above the bottom of the door.
  • A pool enclosure should neither have any traces of barbed wire nor any other harmful devices.
  • There should be no transmission of electric currents through the pool enclosure.
  • Every pool enclosure owner to acquire a pool enclosure permit for any new pool enclosure or one that has been repaired.
