From the examples of swimming pool enclosures you can see above, this accessory is an assembly of different parts and components.
In this section, I am going to introduce you to different parts and components that make up a pool enclosure.
Let’s dive right in:
3.1: Swimming Pool Enclosure Cover
As I explained earlier, a pool enclosure cover is one of the vital component of a swimming pool enclosure.
It’s basically the part that covers and provides a roof to your swimming pool.
In most cases, the swimming pool enclosure cover is made up of polycarbonate sheets or glass.

The choice of your material depends on your budget as well as preferences.
But, here is the reality that most manufacturers won’t tell you.
Using polycarbonate sheet for your pool cover will not only guarantee you a longer life for your enclosure but also save on your costs.
I will explain more about this in the next section, keep reading.
A swimming pool enclosure will offer you several benefits in your disposal ranging from protection from harmful UV radiations, preventing foreign materials from falling into your pool, adding value as well as beauty to your property among others.
Now that you understand the many other benefits that come with owning a pool enclosure, I will go right to the next pool enclosure component which is the frame.
3.2: Pool enclosure frame
In order to ensure full support of your pool enclosure cover, you will need to use frames while building your enclosure.
Pool enclosure frames come in different colors. However, the most common ones are white and bronze.
You might as well decide on the color based on the theme of your home.
The pool enclosure frame is made of a strong metal called Aluminum which has the ability to withstand adverse weather conditions.

How does it achieve this?
Aluminum is coated with paint which prevents moisture and color changes from messing with its quality.
Aside from extruded aluminum, you can as well introduce a wooden frame for your pool enclosure.
However, I wouldn’t recommend such a frame owing to the many drawbacks that come with using it.
First, wooden is a good absorber of water. Meaning, using it as a pool enclosure frame will expose the frame to rotting leading to a shorter lifespan.
Aside that, wood is susceptible to infestation by termites which might consume it leading to huge losses being incurred.
In as much as wood is a cheaper material, it will be important for you to consider such factors before making any purchases.
However, this doesn’t mean that you should avoid using wooden frames, No.
You can choose to use them as long as you adhere to the proper measures required in order to maintain it.
Here is what you need to do.
Before conducting any form of wooden frame installation, make sure you treat the wood with a borate-based preservative.
How is this done?
First, you have to clean the wood and make sure it is dry.
Thereafter, make sure that the room is well ventilated then spread pieces of newspaper to cover your working space.
Wear protective clothing not excluding gloves then apply the preservative using a brush ensuring both ends are well coated.
After you are done, you will go on with a second coat. But not too fast.
At least give the first coast around four hours for it to fully be absorbed then apply a second coat.
Thereafter, give it another 48 hours before spreading over a water-repellent finish on to the wood.
Having done that, your wooden frame will now be fully protected from termite infestation and ready for use.
3.3: Pool enclosure rail system
A rail system is a part of a pool enclosure that facilitates easy opening and closing of your swimming pool enclosure.

In most cases, a pool enclosure rail system is present in retractable pool enclosures as they have the capability of sliding back and forth.
You might be wondering what a retractable pool enclosure means.
Well, a retractable pool enclosure refers to a type of enclosure that can easily be opened and closed by sliding opposite slides of the enclosure.
In other words, its referred to as a telescopic swimming pool enclosure.
This is what I’m talking about;

As you can see, the above pool enclosure is fitted with wheels which facilitate the opening and closure of the enclosure.
Just like a train moves on rails, so does a retractable pool enclosure.
A rail system is constructed round the pool strategically positioned to accommodate rolling of the wheels of your pool enclosure around your pool.
I’m hoping you are now conversant on what a rail system entails.
In most cases, wheels are present in high profile swimming pool enclosures as compared to medium profile enclosures.
You can install a rail system despite the shape of your swimming pool.
Some pools have a regular shape such as rectangle, circle or square while others are irregular.
With skilled manpower on-site, perfuming installation activities on an irregular pool would just be as easy as it would on a regular one.
3.4: Swimming pool enclosure door
A door is one of the most important parts not only for a swimming pool enclosure but also for other structures such as houses, buildings and the likes.
It facilitates entrance as well as exit from the pool enclosure.
Some doors are manually operated while other have a self-locking mechanism.
This leaves you with an option of choosing one that suites your desires and preferences.

Installing a door will definitely heighten the level of privacy in your swimming pool enclosure as well as ensure security.
Additionally, a door will prevent foreign materials blown away by wind from entering your pool enclosure.
This undoubtedly keeps your pool tidy and reduces future constant maintenance routines.
3.5: Pool enclosure door locking mechanism
For a pool enclosure to be properly secured, you will need to install a locking mechanism that will help you achieve this desired purpose.
As I mentioned earlier, you have an option of constructing a door that would use a remote control or otherwise stick to the commonly used locking mechanism.
There are several types of locks that would be ideal for use in your pool enclosure door not excluding;
I. Wing handles
Wing handles are one of the most commonly used types of locks. They are referred to as wing handle simply because they have a handle which is the main part that facilitates pushing or pulling of the pool enclosure door.

II. Latch locks
A latch and a lock are two different equipment that you need to understand.
A latch refers to a clamping equipment which operates by joining two separate surfaces together in order to facilitate closure.
This alone is not enough for maximum safety. You need to use it along with a lock in order for you to achieve maximum safety.
The question is, what is a lock?
Basically, we can term it as an equipment which uses a key for it to fully secure your door.

III. L and T locks
Just as the name suggests, the L and T locks form letter L and T just as shown in the diagram below.

From the picture above, you can visibly tell that the handle is the part facing downwards.
IV. Radial Pin tumbler locks
This type of lock is designed to prevent unauthorized person from opening the lock with a different key. This is facilitated by cylindrical pins which are often arranged in a circular manner.

V. Cam locks
Cam locks are not only used in pool enclosures but also in various equipment and furniture all over the world.
This particular locks are cylindrical in shape and have the locking handle located at one end while the lock on the opposite side of the door lock.
This is what I’m talking about;

VI. Water resistant locks
This type of lock is the best type to use in outdoor enclosures.
Why I’m I saying this?
Water resistant locks have the capability of enduring harsh weather conditions without getting spoilt as they are resistant to water.

Your pool enclosure designer will be in a position to recommend you the best lock for you depending on the type of your swimming pool enclosure.
3.6: Pool enclosure fasteners
Pool enclosure fasteners are meant to hold or rather clasp together parts of a pool enclosure.
In other words, we can say that a fastener system not only protects your pool enclosure from electrolysis but also enables it to last much longer.

There are several types of fasteners in the market for you to choose from. However, the use of zinc metal is popular among most of the companies.
Why is this so?
Zinc is not only pocket friendly but also readily available making it widely used by manufacturing companies.
Nevertheless, we have two main popular types of fasteners. That is Nylo-Tec and Pro-tech fasteners.
First, let me start by outlining some of the benefits of each of the two fasteners.
Nylo-Tec
- It achieves a well finished long lasting look.
- The presence of a UV stabilized color helps it to become resistant to fading.
- It has the capability of withstanding harsh weather conditions.
- Has a wide range of colors to choose from and can be customized to suite your choice of color.
- Nylo-Tec fasteners are considered to be one of the best quality fasteners in the market.
Pro-Tect
- It is easy to install
- Just like the nylo-tec fastener, it has a UV stabilized color which prevents it from fading.
- Pro-tect fastener is one of the best quality fasteners.
- In addition, it does not corrode easily.
- Owing to the fact that it doesn’t easily corrode, pro-tect fasteners are bound to last much longer.
3.7: Pool enclosure ventilation system
A ventilation system is a must have for every enclosed structure be it a house, a building or an enclosure.

It is meant to facilitate free circulation of air inside your pool enclosure.
Without it, you will breath in a chlorine odor which is mostly due to the chlorinated swimming pool water. You don’t want that.
A cool, fresh air will create a more relaxing and comfortable feel in your pool enclosure.
This is the reason why you will need to fix a pool enclosure ventilation system.
An efficient pool enclosure ventilation system should be able to accommodate the following types of air required for a pool enclosure be it indoors or outdoors.
- Outdoor air- This refers to the actual ventilation air. It is the fresh air that enters the enclosure but is yet to be treated.
- Supply air – Supply air is comprised of outdoor air as well as recirculated air. It is the overall airflow that enters the pool space
- Exhaust air – Just like the name suggests, exhaust air refers to air removed from the pool to the outside environment.
- Return air- This is the type of air that gets out of the pool space and comprises of air to be exhausted and recirculated.
Having all this fixed in your pool enclosure ventilation system will ensure efficient air supply in and out of your enclosure.
3.8: Pool Enclosure Gutter
Gutters play a major role not only in pool enclosures but also any built structure.
The question here is, what do we mean by a gutter?
Well, this is an equipment that works by channeling water that falls on top of the roof to a better preferred location away from the structure.

In our case, a pool enclosure. It’s important for you to know that this particular component of a pool enclosure is common with fixed swimming pool enclosures.
Why?
Owing to the fact that a telescopic enclosure is frequently adjusted, it would be impossible to fix gutter around the roof top.
Have a look at this;
Installing a gutter system for your pool enclosure will guarantee you benefits such as;
- Saves you from future maintenance expenses. This comes as a result of its ability to channel water away from the enclosure in turn preventing damage to your enclosure.

However, that is cut short due to a number of situations such as weather changes.
During cold seasons, it might be challenging to use your pool area. This is the reason why you need to introduce a heating system to your pool enclosure.

There are several ways through which you can heat your pool enclosure including;
Electric heaters – This are mostly portable heaters which are best suited for a small space.
However, proper precaution must be adhered when using any portable electrical tool around the pool area.
It is advisable to use it at least 10 feet away from the pool.
Radiant heating – this is one of the best forms of heating suitable for any type of enclosure.
Not only does it heat the entire pool but also warms the floor making it more comfortable for you to move around the enclosure.
All you need to do is set your desired temperature and leave it at that state.
Switching it off will make you wait for 1-2 hours the next time you will be using your enclosure.
CHAPTER 4:
Swimming Pool Enclosure Material
When constructing a pool enclosure, we have two major types of materials that are largely used.
I’m talking of solid polycarbonate sheets and extruded aluminum.
This two are used to build the pool enclosure cover and frames respectively.
Let’s go straight to the main subject of this section.
4.1: Solid polycarbonate sheet for pool enclosure cover
Most pool owners prefer to use solid polycarbonate sheet as the glazing materials.

By glazing I mean, the glassy part of a pool enclosure which forms the pool cover.
This is probably due to the many beneficial factors attached to it that I am about to explain to you.
However, that doesn’t mean you are only limited to a solid polycarbonate sheet.
Materials such as glass can as well be used in place of solid polycarbonate sheet.
However, glass is highly prone to breakage and cracking. In addition to that, glass is more expensive than purchasing a polycarbonate sheet, a reason why most people prefer using polycarbonate sheet as their glazing material.
Glass also has some advantages as it creates a classier look as well as transparency.
Also glass can be improvised to block the harmful UV radiations.
Nevertheless, I will explain to you why a polycarbonate sheet would be the best choice, keep reading.
4.2: Benefits of using polycarbonate sheet
Some of the main benefits why you should go for polycarbonate swimming pool enclosure include:

4.2: Extruded aluminum material for pool enclosure frame
Extruded aluminum has largely been used in the construction of a swimming pool enclosure.

This is due to the fact that it possesses attractive features such as
- Durability- Extruded aluminum is quite durable as it is a strong metal.
- Rust resistant- The paint on the extruded aluminum prevents water and oxygen from reacting which would otherwise cause rusting on the metal.
- Lightweight- Apart from being a strong metal, extruded aluminum weighs less making it easily portable.
- Recyclable- Aluminum can be recycled be it damaged or unused.
Aside extruded aluminum, you can also use wood for your frame.
As I said earlier, you have to keep in mind that wood is prone to rotting more so if it constantly absorbs water.
To add on that, wood can be infested by termites which might lead to huge losses.

However, if your home is located in the woods, then using wood would be the perfect choice as it would blend evenly with the surrounding environment.
All you have to do is treat the wood before using it as well as painting it to avoid reduce the risk of rotting.
This are the main reasons as to why most people choose to construct their frames using extruded aluminum.
CHAPTER 5:
Types of Pool Enclosures to Consider
Based on your swimming pool design, we have several types of pool enclosures that you might consider introducing to your swimming pool space.

3. High profile swimming pool enclosure
A high profile pool enclosure simply refers to a pool cover that is positioned at a higher distance above your swimming pool.

You can clearly see that such a pool enclosure leaves ample space around the pool.
This makes it use more materials during construction in turn raising the cost of constructing it.
4. Low profile swimming pool enclosure
Unlike a high profile pool enclosure, a low profile pool enclosure has its roof just a few meters above the pool.
In other words, the pool enclosure lays low above the swimming pool.

Due to its design, you will use less materials in constructing it making it one of the most affordable type of pool enclosures.
However, a low profile pool enclosure will restrict you from comfortably moving around your pool area owing to its low height.
5. Pool enclosure attached to house
In case your swimming pool is located next to your house, then building an enclosure attached to your house would be an intelligent choice.
Why am I saying so?
Attaching a pool enclosure would not only ensure improved security but also be of much convenience.

6. Pool enclosure roof styles
Apart from categorizing pool enclosures as per their size and height, we can as well classify them according to the roofing designs.
We have several types of roofing designs that you can choose from.
However, in this guide I will majorly focus on the most commonly applied designs as shown below.

7. Flat Roof Style
Just as the name implies, this type of roof has a relatively flat roof surface.
In most cases, flat roof design is classified as a low profile pool enclosure.
8. Sloped roof style
A sloped roof has one its side slanting from a point higher to a lower point.
Most pool enclosures that are attached to the house take this form of roof design.
To add on that, a slope roof design allows debris and other unwanted materials to easily slide down the roof minimizing maintenance.
Also, this increases the durability of your roof as it will not be destroyed by the accumulated debris.
9. Gable roof style
This type of roof design has both of its two opposite sides sloping and meeting at the top.
You can otherwise refer to it as an A-frame roof.
Just like letter A comprises of two slanting sides, so does it.
Many homes have a gable roof design a reason why it is more popular.
As you can see from the diagram above, its roof is positioned high above the pool making it to be classified as one of the high profile pool enclosures.
As compared to a flat roof design, gable roof requires a lot of materials during construction making it more expensive.
10. Dome roof style
One unique feature about this roof design is that it neither slants nor does it have a flat surface, a dome room forms a semi-circular shape.
This allows for unwanted materials to easily slide down the dome in turn avoiding accumulation as a result leading to massive destruction.
Aside that, a dome roof design leaves ample room for accommodating other features such as furniture and plants.
Why is this so?
The roof is positioned higher above the pool and we have no reason not to classify it as either a medium or high profile pool enclosure.
11. Mansard roof style
From the diagram above, you can clearly conclude that a mansard roof comprises of the flat roof and the gable roof.
This is due to the fact that it has a flat surface at the top and two opposite slanting sides.
Also, its sides form a trapezoidal shape that join at the flat topmost surface.
A mansard roof can not only be designed into several architectural structures but also is cable of accommodating extra features such as furniture in your enclosure.
12. Hip roof style
Most people confuse a hip roof with a gable roof style.
Often because they look so much alike. But the thing is, this two are different.
